David Bristow writes that John Brown helped three slaves get to Topeka and left them with John Armstrong. He took them north on the Lane road (Highway 75) to Dr. Ira Blanchard in Civil Bend, Iowa. He took them in a wagon with a false bottom where the Freedom Seekers rode during times of danger. At Nebraska City, a group of slave hunters stopped and searched the wagon. They passed safely in the hidden compartment. At the Missouri River Ferry, the Ferryman denied them passage until Armstrong’s Colt’s Navy revolver convinced him otherwise. These slaves were left with Dr. Blanchard and they made it safely to Canada.
