G. L. Stearns was a little known but very active abolitionist and supporter of John Brown. He was a member of the Secret Six and financed Brown’s activities including the raid on Harpers Ferry. He conducted active correspondence with other Kansas abolitionist and UGRR supporters. A letter from a T.W. Carter, agent, states that Mr. Carter has sent John Brown 200 revolvers to Iowa City, Iowa and the bill was sent to G. L. Stearns. One of my favorite stories was documented in a letter from Joseph Gardner to Stearns. In this letter, Joseph Gardner describes the gun fight where the Freedom Seeker, Napoleon Simpson is killed.
