The Texas state government would pay a $600.00 reward for any slave brought back from Mexico. This proved to be not enough. The Freedom Seekers in Mexico were armed and fought back. Later, Texas upped the reward to 1/3 of the amount the slave could bring on the auction block. This amount could be as much as $30,000.00 in modern dollars. It is estimated that about 10,000 slaves had found freedom in Mexico by the start of the Civil War.
